# Puerto Vallarta Safety Guide 2026: What Every Visitor Should Know

Safe Travel México · March 31, 2026

---|----------------|-----------|--------|
 | 2024 | 5,103 | 1,749 | — |
 | 2025 | 5,492 | 1,882 | +7.6% |

The rate increased 7.6% year-over-year. That's worth noting, but context matters — PV's absolute numbers are small, and the increase is partly attributed to better reporting and population growth from domestic migration.

### Crime Breakdown (2024)

| Category | Count | % |
 |----------|-------|---|
 | Robbery | 1,338 | 26.2% |
 | Assault | 862 | 16.9% |
 | Domestic violence | 618 | 12.1% |
 | Threats | 461 | 9.0% |
 | Fraud | 430 | 8.4% |
 | Sexual abuse | 332 | 6.5% |
 | Other | 1,062 | 20.8% |

As with most Mexican cities, **robbery is the #1 category**. In PV this is overwhelmingly petty theft: unattended bags on the beach, phone snatching, and vehicle break-ins.

## Neighborhood Safety Guide

### Zona Romántica (Best for tourists)

The heart of PV's tourist scene — Olas Altas beach, restaurants, nightlife, LGBTQ+ friendly bars. Well-policed, heavily foot-trafficked until late. **Our rating: Low risk.**

### El Centro / Malecón

The boardwalk and downtown core. Safe during day and evening. The Malecón has increased police presence and surveillance. Street vendors can be persistent but not threatening. **Our rating: Low risk.**

### Marina Vallarta

Gated resort community. Golf courses, marina, upscale dining. Very low crime. **Our rating: Very low risk.**

### Hotel Zone (Zona Hotelera Norte)

Beach resorts along the highway north. Self-contained and well-secured. **Our rating: Very low risk.**

### Pitillal & Ixtapa (Working-class neighborhoods)

Where locals live. Higher incident rates but still low by national standards. No reason to avoid, but stick to main streets at night. **Our rating: Moderate — standard urban awareness.**

### Avoid at Night

- The outskirts south toward Tomatlán

- Isolated stretches of the highway at night

- Deserted beaches after dark (robbery risk, not violence)

## How PV Compares to Similar Destinations

| Destination | Rate/100k | Tourism Level |
 |-------------|-----------|---------------|
 | Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo | 274 | Medium |
 | Riviera Nayarit | 350 | Medium-High |
 | **Puerto Vallarta** | **507** | **High** |
 | Cancún | ~3,006 | Very High |

PV is significantly safer than Cancún by the numbers, and comparable to (though slightly higher than) its Nayarit neighbors.

## 8 Safety Tips for Puerto Vallarta

1. **The Malecón is your friend** — stay on well-lit, populated routes at night
 2. **Use Uber** (yes, it works in PV) instead of street taxis
 3. **Beach theft is real** — never leave valuables unattended at the beach
 4. **Water safety matters more than crime** — riptides kill more tourists than criminals in PV
 5. **ATM safety** — use bank ATMs inside, not standalone street machines
 6. **Don't buy drugs** — street dealers near bars are the #1 way tourists end up in bad situations
 7. **Download InDrive or Uber** before arrival for reliable transport
 8. **Carry a copy of your passport**, not the original

## LGBTQ+ Safety

Puerto Vallarta is widely considered the most LGBTQ+-friendly destination in Mexico. The Zona Romántica has an established queer community, rainbow crosswalks, and Pride events. Our data shows no pattern of hate-crime targeting in PV's tourist zones.

## The Verdict

Puerto Vallarta's data profile is strong. A 507/100k rate, a well-established tourist infrastructure, and a track record of millions of safe visits per year make it one of Mexico's most reliable beach destinations.

The 7.6% YoY increase is something we'll continue monitoring, but it doesn't change PV's overall safety positioning.
